I'm originally from Mt. Morris, Michigan, a suburb of Flint, which is basically a suburb of Detroit. Growing up in the "turbulent 60's" with a chaotic houseful of siblings, pets, and TVs had a profound impact on my budding art career. Amidst all this disorder, I drew whenever I could. I went through a great deal of paper plates and paper bags before my parents actually started buying me sketchbooks. I got my first job as a senior in high school painting murals in the classrooms of local elementary schools. This went on longer than anyone originally anticipated and eventually I had painted murals in every school in the Mt. Morris School district, many of which are still there 25 years later. This expanded to other schools in the mid-Michigan area, businesses, churches, and private residences. Working in the schools reintroduced me to many of the children's books I read growing up as well as new ones and gave me the incentive to pursue children's publishing as a career. After studying painting and design at the University of Michigan and graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1983, I began freelancing. My illustrations are a combination of media, including gouache, acrylic, color pencil, and pastel. Since 1995, I've also been working digitally, creating graphics and animations for Internet web sites and CD-ROMs. I began working with Cricket in 1989, followed shortly with Ladybug and Humpty Dumpty. My current clients range from children's publishers to editorial assignments and corporate work. When not working on children's books or other commissions, I focus on fine arts. My oil-on-canvas paintings are primarily figurative in nature and focus on social, psychological, and political themes. My work has been exhibited in the Detroit and Flint area, Washington, D.C., and New York City. I moved to the Washington, D.C., area in 1990. After living for 10 years in Arlington I moved into the city and now live just down the street from the White House. Links
